The suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been freed from prison after spending 27 months in detention. The Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed his release in a statement, explaining that Kyari had met the bail conditions set by the court.
Kyari’s arrest and detention began on February 14, 2022, when he was taken into custody by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.

According to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kyari was released on Saturday, June 1, after perfecting his bail conditions. This development comes after the Federal High Court, Abuja division, granted Kyari a two-week bail earlier in the month.
Kyari’s release is expected to enable him to conclude the burial rites of his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024. The court is set to determine his bail application on Friday, May 31, in the trial related to drug-related charges filed by the NDLEA.
During his time in detention, Kyari reportedly survived an attack by aggrieved inmates who accused him of insincerity in bribe-for-release deals. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, months after Kyari was remanded in custody.
