Emdee Tiamiyu, a Nigerian YouTuber, has issued an apology to Nigerians following severe backlash he received regarding his recent interview with BBC News.

As previously reported, the UK-based content creator participated in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), during which he made statements suggesting that Nigerians use MSc degrees as a strategy to gain entry into the UK.

In his remarks, he asserted that his fellow countrymen are not sincerely interested in education or the qualification itself but aim to relocate to the UK with their families.

“The student route is more like an answered prayer. It is a big bracket that’s able to take a lot of people, the ordinary people. We’re beginning to see that a lot of people just hide behind the studentship. So the student thing is not real, it’s not like they need the degrees,” he said.

After the UK Home Office implemented a ban on foreign students pursuing degrees below a PhD from bringing dependents, the interview video quickly went viral.

Emdee’s statements in the interview did not sit well with numerous Nigerians, and they heavily criticized him for his careless remarks on an international platform.

In response to the backlash, Emdee publicly apologized to all those who were offended by his comments in the interview. He expressed that he decided to apologize after contemplating his words.

He clarified that his intention in participating in the interview was to shed light on the challenges faced by the Black community in the UK and did not intend to tarnish the image of Nigerians.
