Wizkid and Wande Coal, Nigerian singers, borrowed money from banks to finance their music careers, according to Sony Music Publishing Nigeria Managing Director Godwin Tom.
“He revealed this in an interview on 3Music TV in Accra, Ghana.”

Nigerian artists have taken financial risks and invested in their own talent to become the stars they are today.
“Tom explained that Nigerian artists often invest their own money to become successful. For example, he knew that Wizkid took out a loan at one point to fund his career. Wizkid believed in himself and took a risk on himself, and Wande Coal did the same.”
If a Nigerian artist’s song hits number one in Accra, they will be there the next day, even if they have to borrow money. They will do radio interviews, find the people they need to talk to, and figure out how to capitalize on the attention. They will perform at clubs and make a lot of money. They could enter the country with $100 and leave with $20,000.
