Grammy-award winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems has opened up about the challenges of fame and success, and how she stays true to herself.
In an interview with American rapper Kendrick Lamar for Interview Magazine, Tems said that she often feels like she’s “in a zoo” when she’s in the public eye. “People are always watching you, and it’s easy to get caught up in what they think of you,” she said. “But I try to remember that I’m the one who has to live with myself, so I need to be true to myself.”

Tems also talked about her decision to switch from Afrobeats to R&B. She said that she was initially discouraged from pursuing R&B because it’s not as popular in Nigeria as Afrobeats. “But I didn’t care about the money,” she said. “I just wanted to make music that I loved.”
Tems said that she’s grateful for her success, but she’s also aware of the challenges that come with it. “Fame can be isolating,” she said. “But I try to stay grounded by surrounding myself with people who love and support me.”
Tems is a role model for many young people, and she hopes that her story will inspire them to stay true to themselves, no matter what. “If you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything,” she said.
