Nigerian singer Rema has called for unity among Afrobeats artists amid the ongoing genre controversy. In a speech at the 2023 Headies Awards, where he won the Best Male Artist of the Year award, Rema said that all Afrobeats artists should be grouped together, regardless of what genre they label their music.

Rema’s comments come after Burna Boy, one of the most popular Afrobeats artists in the world, said in an interview that he does not identify with the genre. Burna Boy argued that the term “Afrobeats” is too limiting and does not accurately reflect the diversity of African music.

Rema, however, believes that it is important for Afrobeats artists to stand together and support each other. He said that the genre is still in its early stages of development, and that it is important for artists to work together to promote it.

“We are in a very sensitive period,” Rema said. “If we don’t give our attention to our institutions, we will miss this chance that we have. And we will never have this chance again.”

Rema also pointed out that other genres, such as reggae, have faced similar challenges in the past. However, these genres were able to overcome these challenges by uniting and supporting each other.

Rema’s comments have been met with mixed reactions. Some people agree with him that it is important for Afrobeats artists to stand together, while others believe that artists should be free to label their music however they want.

Regardless of one’s opinion on the matter, Rema’s comments have sparked a much-needed conversation about the future of Afrobeats. It remains to be seen whether or not artists will be able to put aside their differences and unite for the greater good of the genre.
