Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has been sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison for engaging in organ trafficking by the Central Criminal Court in Old Bailey, United Kingdom.

His wife, Beatrice, received a prison sentence of four years and six months, while Dr. Obinna Obeta, who aided the couple in the offense, was given a ten-year sentence.

Following a six-week trial, the three individuals were convicted on Thursday, March 23, of planning the travel of a young merchant to the United Kingdom with the intention of exploiting him for his kidney.

The group had collaborated to transport the 21-year-old man to London in order to harvest his organ for the purpose of saving their daughter, Sonia, who is struggling with a fatal illness with a terminal ailment.

Under the United Kingdom Modern Slavery Act 2015, organ trafficking is a serious offense. Their verdict is the first of its kind in the UK.
