Seun Kuti, the troubled Afrobeat singer currently held at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos, following an altercation with a police officer, has been bestowed with the title of “General Overseer” by fellow inmates in his cell.
As reported by Vanguard, it is said that Seun Kuti was presented with a Holy Bible as a symbol of his newfound authority. However, the prisoners initially resisted his appointment, causing some unrest before he was eventually accepted as the GO.

Seun was issued an arrest order by Inspector-General of Police Alkali Baba following a recorded incident where he physically assaulted a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge on May 13.
However, on Monday, May 15, accompanied by his legal representatives, Seun voluntarily surrendered himself to the police. The following day, he was charged and subsequently remanded by the Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court.
According to the account, Seun’s initial reception in the cell was marked by the commanding, deep voice of the inmate leader instructing him to stand upon entering and joining the other suspects.
A problem arose within the cell shortly thereafter when it was discovered that the other prisoners had rejected Seun’s presence. They vehemently protested by pounding on the secure metal door, demanding his removal.
Sources mentioned in the story disclosed that Seun started pleading for calm as the commotion escalated among the inmates. It became evident to him that the disturbance caused by his arrival and the prisoners’ refusal of his presence went unnoticed by the police guards.
Reportedly, Seun made a commitment to provide them with an immediate sum of N25,000. Desperate for a phone, he requested to call his wife, who promptly arrived with the money and handed it to the leader of the inmates.
Following this, the prisoners welcomed Seun and provided him with a place to sit down.
Seun’s frustration and anger over the distressing events led him to embark on a hunger strike, refusing to consume any of the provided food, including the meals brought by his wife.
This hunger strike persisted for more than a day and a half before he eventually resumed eating.
The climax of the unfolding events occurred when the fellow prisoners elected Seun as the General Overseer of the cell, presenting him with a Bible. This signifies his current role in leading prayers among the inmates whenever the situation necessitates it, accompanied by a collective chant of “GO, GO.”
On Friday afternoon, as Seun ascended the steps to the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police Waheed Ayilara, witnesses noticed him firmly clutching the Bible in his left hand. Subsequently, he returned to the cell after descending the steps.
Sources disclosed that Seun has received visits from his elder brother Femi, other family members, his legal team, and a small group of friends.
