Mikel Obi, a popular Nigerian professional footballer, recently shared a harrowing experience he and his family went through when his father was kidnapped in Nigeria in 2018.
According to Mikel, he received a call from kidnappers who demanded a ransom of over $100,000 for the release of his father.
Mikel was in the middle of the 2018 World Cup in Russia at the time, but he immediately took action and paid the ransom to secure his father’s release.

Mikel spoke out about the ordeal in a recent interview with The Guardian, revealing that he had to make the difficult decision to pay the kidnappers because he feared for his father’s safety.
He said,
“I was emotionally distraught but had to make a quick decision about whether to pay the ransom or not. I had to put myself together and act fast because my father’s life was at stake.”
Mikel also revealed that the experience had a significant impact on him and his family, both emotionally and financially.
He said,
“It was a traumatic experience for my family, especially my father. No one should have to go through something like that. It was also financially draining, as we had to pay a significant amount of money to secure his release.”
Kidnapping for ransom is a prevalent issue in Nigeria, particularly in the Northern part of the country.
The Nigerian government has been criticized for not doing enough to address the issue, leaving many families like Mikel’s to deal with the consequences of the rampant criminal activity.
Mikel’s story serves as a reminder of the dangers of kidnapping and the toll it can take on families.
It also sheds light on the need for governments to take action to combat this criminal activity and protect their citizens from harm.
