Germany is really ramping up its efforts to attract skilled labor, and it shows. Between January and June 2024, the country issued a whopping 80,000 work visas, according to a report by Schengen News. These visas, granted for employment purposes, were confirmed by the Federal Foreign Office through the German Press Agency.
Out of those, about 40,000 work visas were specifically issued to skilled workers. That’s actually 3,000 more than the number of similar visas given out during the same period in 2023. This uptick in visa approvals is closely tied to Germany’s ongoing labor shortages, particularly in sectors needing skilled workers.

The German Economic Institute (IW) backs this up, noting in their analysis that Germany had a staggering 570,000 job vacancies left unfilled in 2023. These shortages are, unsurprisingly, having a significant impact on the country’s economy.
Among the sectors hit hardest by these shortages are:
transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering, and information technology, according to Schengen News. The problem isn’t expected to go away anytime soon either. A separate study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) suggests that the number of labor shortages will continue to rise in the coming years. German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil has even predicted that the country will need about seven million employees by 2035.
To tackle this issue, German authorities are planning to introduce the Indian Skilled Worker strategy during the German-Indian government consultations this autumn. The strategy is part of broader efforts to ease immigration rules and attract more skilled labor into the country.
