Ismaila Mustapha, widely recognized as Mompha, has been rearrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

It was confirmed by the anti-graft agency to Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday, May 15, 2023.

During the court proceedings, the EFCC counsel, Suleiman Suleiman, informed the presiding judge that, in cooperation with their international partners, the prosecution had successfully facilitated the arrest of Mompha.

“The prosecution would like to bring to the knowledge of my lord that, in collaboration with our international partners, we have been able to apprehend the defendant. We plan to take him into custody and produce him before the court,” Suleiman said.

Subsequently, Justice Mojisola Dada adjourned the trial until July 3, allowing for its continuation at a later date.

In an official statement, the commission acknowledged that during a court hearing on June 10, 2022, they had informed the court about Mompha’s possession of an additional passport, which had not been presented as part of his bail conditions.

The commission further revealed that Mompha had utilized this undisclosed passport to travel from Ghana to Dubai on April 11, 2022, via Emirates Airlines, thereby violating the court’s order.

Consequently, Justice Dada revoked the previously granted bail variation of N25 million and issued a bench warrant for Mompha’s arrest, owing to his failure to appear in court.

Due to Mompha’s prolonged absence and the inability of both the prosecution and the defense to produce him in court, Justice Dada decided on September 22, 2022, that the trial would proceed in absentia.

On January 22, 2022, Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment, were formally charged by the EFCC with eight counts of N6 billion money laundering. Mompha entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
