Over 4,000 courses and 180 degree programs are offered by the academic institution through its 12 undergraduate, graduate, and professional faculties. The university is a part of the U15, a coalition of Canadian academic institutions that prioritize research.

Dalhousie’s buildings range in date from Hart House, constructed in 1864, to the Collaborative Health Education Building, finished in 2015. On Halifax’s Grand Parade, Dalhousie University’s primary building was finished in 1824. When the school outgrew the space and the City of Halifax desired ownership of the entire Grand Parade, it was destroyed in 1885. The current location of Halifax City Hall is where the original Dalhousie College formerly stood.

Five libraries are located on campus. The largest one, Killam Memorial Library, opened its doors in 1971. It has well over a million books and 40,000 journals, making it the largest educational library in Atlantic Canada.
