Australia to join US’ express entry program: What it will mean for travellers

Starting January next year, Australian travellers will gain the opportunity to apply for expedited access through United States Customs and Immigration.

Understanding the Global Entry Program

The Global Entry program provides pre-approved travellers with faster immigration and customs processing at major US airports. Members of Global Entry also gain access to the Transportation Security Administration’s Pre-Check program, which streamlines security screening for US domestic flights.

Implications of Australia Joining the Program

Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized, “Joining the Global Entry program highlights the strong and close relationship between our two countries.”

Current Global Entry Access

Currently, citizens from 15 countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore, and South Korea, already benefit from the Global Entry program.

Eligibility and Application Process

On Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong announced that starting January 2025, a select group of Australians who frequently travel to the US will be eligible to apply. Initially, around 1,000 Australians who have visited the US at least five times in the past year will qualify for expedited entry, according to the Australian Financial Review.

In the program’s second phase, which depends on legislative approval by the Australian federal parliament, there will be no cap on the number of expedited entries available. Applicants will need to undergo a thorough background check and attend an in-person interview.

Program Costs

The US Department of Homeland Security lists the Global Entry program fee as US$100 (approximately $153 AUD), while the TSA Pre-Check program costs US$77.95 (about $119.25 AUD).
