Apply for Research Grants in Open Competition Program (Round 3)

The LEO Foundation is currently inviting applications for its Research Grants in Open Competition Program. This initiative is aimed at supporting top-tier dermatology research projects on a global scale.

Supported Areas of Research

The LEO Foundation’s Research Grants in Open Competition program is dedicated to advancing the best dermatology research projects from around the world. They are open to various types of research, including basic, translational, technical, epidemiological, and clinical studies. Applications are welcomed for research that enhances the understanding of skin biology and the underlying medicinal, biological, chemical, or pharmacological mechanisms related to dermatological diseases and their symptoms.

Projects that address clinical concerns for individuals at risk of, or suffering from, skin diseases—particularly those that explore the impact on quality of life and societal costs—are also encouraged. The LEO Foundation exclusively supports investigator-initiated clinical trials, where the researcher is fully responsible for the project’s conception, execution, and publication, free from commercial interests.

Funding Information

Typically, applicants request grants ranging from DKK 2 to 4 million, with funding provided over a period of 1 to 3 years.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants must have a PhD or equivalent academic qualification and be affiliated with a university, hospital, or other non-profit organization. The program is open to researchers globally.

Important Notes:

  • Applicants can only submit one application per call. If multiple applications are submitted, only the first will be evaluated, and the rest will be automatically rejected.
  • Each application must have a single main applicant and one host organization. If the project involves collaborations requiring fund redistribution, the main applicant and their host organization are responsible for managing this.
  • A grantee can only hold one active grant from the LEO Foundation at a time. Additional funding for new projects or continuations can be applied for within the last year of an active grant period, but these cannot commence until the current grant has concluded.
  • Resubmissions of previously reviewed applications are limited to one attempt. If resubmitting, the applicant must clearly outline the changes made from the previous version in a cover letter attached with the necessary documents.

Ineligible Projects

The Foundation does not support projects focused on skin cancer (e.g., melanoma, CTCL, BCC, and SCC) at this time. However, studies using skin cancer models as tools for investigating other aspects of skin biology or diseases may be considered. Additionally, research projects involving commercial companies or drug testing for commercial purposes are ineligible for funding.
