“Fela Anikulapo-Kuti gave us the platform which is Afrobeat for us to climb on top,” 9ice said. “We were trying to do Afropop. We were trying to do afrobeats. We were trying to do different names. But Baba [Fela] already has something that the world recognized.”

9ice added that Afrobeats has taught him a lot, and he is grateful to be able to follow in the footsteps of Fela and other great Nigerian musicians.

“Afrobeat taught me a lot,” he said. “King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti are our grandfathers. And I’m glad to be in existence to emulate or to follow what they’ve done.”

In other news, Grammy award-winning Nigerian singer Tems has spoken up about the difficulties associated with fame and success.

In an interview with American rapper Kendrick Lamar, Tems said that success often comes with demands and challenges, but she tries to overcome them by being herself.

“Success is not easy,” she said. “It comes with a lot of demands and a lot of challenges. But I try to stay true to myself and do what I love.”
